Interesting facts about cardboard

Cardboard packaging is everywhere. It can take up a lot of room in the average bin or skip of most businesses. It is made of cellulose fibres, generally from wood pulp, which can be used again if recycled.

The UK produced an estimated 9.3 million tonnes of waste packaging in 2001. Of this 5.1 million tonnes came from households and the remaining 4.2 million tonnes from commercial and industrial sources.

Tips

Cardboard makes excellent compost. Scrunch it up and put it in your compost bin with kitchen and garden waste. It also makes excellent mulch for vegetable beds

Cardboard containers need to be empty and flattened as much as possible to maximise the amount you can fit into a recycling container. If possible, it is also helpful to remove any obvious fastenings, adhesive tape etc.
